Japanese Prime Minister Abe had strong praise for Bank of Japan Governor Kuroda yesterday
- Abe was speaking at a news conference
- Said he trusted Kuroda's ability as central bank governor and leaves monetary policy to him
(Reuters have a wee bit more here)
And, via Bloomberg:
- praised Bank of Japan's efforts to reach its inflation target
- stopped short of saying whether he'd reappoint Kuroda
- "the slate is completely blank" on his choice for governor. "We haven't yet reached the 2 percent price stability target, but we expect the Bank of Japan to continue to make efforts to achieve it"
Does this indicate Kuroda is likely to get the nod for another term? Plenty seem to think so.
A question I have though is ... when would Abe make the announcement? Kuroda's term expires in April of 2018. Why would Abe announce a decision now? I expect he'll leave it for another few months, at least.
