TOKYO (MNI) – Japanese retail sales marked a second straight
year-on-year rise in July, up 0.7%, but the pace of growth decelerated
from a revised 1.2% gain in June due to weaker sales of cars, machinery
and gasoline, data from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry
released on Tuesday showed.
The July reading came in weaker than the median forecast for a 1.0%
rise in a Market News International survey of economists.
In July retail sales of automobiles fell 18.3% on year, posting the
10th consecutive y/y drop after -17.3% in June, while sales of machinery
and equipment including consumer electronics rose 9.9%, marking the

rose 1.6% in July after +2.1% in June.

levels (y/y): July +2.5%, a third straight y/y rise.
