Bank of Russia says SWIFT system used to steal money
Russia's central bank said one of the country's bank was the target of hackers who used the SWIFT global banking system to steal 339.5m rubles, or about $6 million. The name of the bank wasn't released but late last year reports circulated that one of the country's big banks was hit on Dec 15.
They were somehow able to take over the bank's SWIFT operator's workstation and the bank likely didn't catch it in time to stop or reverse the wire. The SWIFT network reps said it wasn't an issue with their technology but rather that the bank's computer wasn't locked down.
